LOCATIONS

Welcome to Katz Bagel Bakery, a cherished gem tucked away in Chelsea, Massachusetts, at 139 Park St. If you’re a fan of authentic, New York-style bagels, this delightful culinary establishment is the place to be. Known for its rich history and commitment to crafting exceptional bagels, Katz has proudly served the community since the 1930s, continuing a legacy of Eastern European bagel-making that has stood the test of time.

Stepping into Katz Bagel Bakery, you’ll immediately sense the warm, inviting atmosphere. The place exudes a classic charm, reminiscent of a bygone era. It’s small and intimate, reflecting the essence of a mom-and-pop bakery where quality reigns supreme over quantity. This is the kind of spot where bagel aficionados feel at home, and it’s clear that the local clientele, including dedicated fans like ‘David O.’ who has been coming for 50 years, appreciate the authentic, old-world craft that goes into each bagel.

One of the standout features of Katz is its unwavering dedication to simplicity and excellence. As ‘David T.’ mentioned, “Do one thing and do it the best you possibly can.” At Katz, the focus is on producing the perfect bagel. Each bagel is made fresh daily, yielding a chewy exterior and a delightfully soft inside that you simply won’t find anywhere else. Whether you opt for a classic bagel or a specialty like their renowned pizza bagel, prepare to be amazed by the balance of flavors and textures.

  • Must-Try Offerings:
    • Plain Bagel with Scallion Cream Cheese: The scallion cream cheese is packed with flavor, offering a perfectly savory spread for the bagels.
    • Pizza Bagel: An iconic creation that has won the hearts of many, it’s a fusion of classic bagel and cheesy pizza that’s both fun and filling.
    • Lox & Chive Cream Cheese: Savory and rich, this pairing adds a lavish touch to your bagel experience.
    • Whoopie Pies and Cheesecake: Finish off your meal with a satisfying sweet treat, reminiscent of cherished childhood desserts.

While the bagels are clearly the highlight, Katz Bagel Bakery also boasts a selection of other delightful options. From frozen pizzas to chicken pot pies, there’s something for everyone. Yet, it’s the bagels and their creative toppings that truly shine here.

One interesting aspect of Katz is their unique approach to serving bagels. Rather than toasting, they serve them warm from the oven, allowing the freshness to take center stage. This might catch newcomers by surprise—such as when ‘Erin O.’ shared her experience of receiving her sesame bagel with lox & chive cream cheese in a separate container—but it’s a thoughtful way to appreciate the true quality of their products.

The reviews speak for themselves. Customers frequently express their delight at finding authentic bagels that rival those from New York and New Jersey, and the friendly, helpful staff only adds to the welcoming vibe. However, be mindful that parking is on the street and can be a bit of a challenge, but as many have noted, the trip is certainly worth it.

In conclusion, Katz Bagel Bakery is more than just a place to grab a quick bite; it’s a culinary institution that honors the art of bagel-making. Whether you’re a local or just visiting the Boston area, make it a point to stop by Katz for an unforgettable bagel experience that’s steeped in history and flavor. You won’t regret it!

We are NJ bagel snobs and these are the best bagels we have found in 10 years near Boston. The pizza bagels and dogs are great as well. Chive cream cheese is VERY chivy but we like that. 11/10, we have finally found the best bagels near Boston.

The pizza bagel here is very good. They bagels are made fresh everyday . You can taste it's fresh . It's also very tasty . The price is good for the quality and portion size. The parking is on the street and a bit difficult . They don't have a parking garage unfortunately but it's definitely worth the trip . The staff is really friendly and helpful. The vibe is friendly and welcoming.

Bagels and cream cheese. That's it. Do one thing and do it the best you possibly can. At Katz they don't toast bagels. They don't sell coffee. They don't make breakfast sandwiches. They don't do a lot of things. They do however make a very affordable, chewy on the outside New York style bagel and amazing scallion cream cheese. They've been doing it for years. Grab a few dozen and some cream cheese for the office....you will be a hero!

I am with Philip! I too am from Plymouth and will call in an order to pick up at Katz, anytime I am due to be in Boston for any reason. Best NY style/Jewish bagels around! Many bagels at other places are like bread with a hole in it and too soft and large. Katz bagels are chewy, as they should be. The real deal. The cream cheeses and pizza bagels are also excellent!

So incredibly happy to finally find bagels that actually would rival NY/NJ bagels in Massachusetts! I've been on the hunt for good bagels in the Boston area for so long and these definitely are top tier. Note that this is a very small mom & pop style bagel shop with no indoor seating and only street parking. They also serve bagels very differently than other places I've been to. For example, I ordered a sesame bagel with lox & chive cream cheese, and the bagel was served to me cut in half with the cream cheese in a separate container. Luckily they provided knives to assemble your bagel, but it did take me by surprise. Another difference is that they don't toast bagels here, but it shouldn't be a deal breaker for you because these bagels are served fresh and warm from the oven. I loved the sesame bagel that I tried - it was perfectly soft and warm on the inside while also being slightly crispy and chewy on the outside, exactly what I'm looking for in my bagels. The lox & chive cream cheese was also tasty and was the perfect amount of salty and savory goodness. Next time I visit I'll make sure to get a bunch of extra bagels to savor!

Really old school bagels. Fresh, insanely so bagels. Service was perfect, walked in door told them what I want and was out the door in 15 minutes. Good chive cream cheese. Place is decidedly old school in terms of ambiance. Totally authentic. Got two dozen for the staff at work and everyone loved them. If I am in the Chelsea area, grab some more. And parking was pretty easy too.
